MOTIVATION: WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO IT ANYWAY?
By Darryn Aldridge

Finding the right motivation for any goal we take on in life, will greatly enhance the chances of us actually succeeding and completing the goal successfully.

Very often we decide that we need to lose weight, but don’t really give ourselves a very good reason for doing so, and as such, we don’t take on the task with the gusto and commitment that it really needs for us to see it through.

By sitting down and giving some serious thought to why you want to lose weight, it will take you a long way towards you actually meeting your expectations, and succeeding in your attempts.

Here are some questions you may wish to consider:

  1. Healthier lifestyle: How does not being able to participate in events, play with the children or get about with your friends make you feel? Wouldn’t you like to be the one that is able to get out and do all the things that this world has to offer?
  2. Family concerns: Your family is in as much danger as you. Your habits will be passed on to your children, as will the health issues that are associated with being overweight. You must also consider how your condition is affecting the whole family, and how any health issues will impact the family as a whole. I’m sure as a parent you will want the very best for your children. You need to ask yourself if you are setting a good example for them.
  3. Personal Satisfaction: While we don’t necessarily need to look like a model, we do tend to feel better about ourselves when we have a better self image of ourselves. Being physically happy will help you to be mentally happy also. Imagine yourself wearing your dream outfit or performing an activity you are no longer able to do in your present state. Imagine how good that will make you feel.
  4. Medical necessity: What is the cost to your health medically if you are unfit and overweight? The statistics are mounting up concerning the diseases and health issues that are now prevalent in our society due to the epidemic of an over-weight and obese society. Do you really want to die earlier than is necessary, or become a burden to your family? Just the monetary costs alone can be crippling to a lot of households, and many could use that money for other commitments in life. Can you afford it?

As you can see, once we have clearly defined purposes for wanting to lose weight, we can now use these reasons as a major part of our motivation to seeing it through. You must now take all this motivation you have gathered and start to develop a real Can Do attitude. By “Can Do”, I mean you must totally believe that you will be able to achieve your goal, and live that goal for the rest of your life. Without this total belief in yourself, your task will become so much harder and you may find that you fall off the rails and revert back to the old habits that you are used to.

So, have you got the right stuff to see this through?

Only you can honestly answer this question, and only after you have gone through the previous steps will you start to discover if you are on a weight program for the right motivating reasons, or whether it is just a whim that is destined for failure.

MISSING THE MARK!
© By Lena Sanchez

Shortly before the end of the flu season last year I noticed several news people on different news programs say, “The flu vaccine missed the mark with the flu strains that’s going around this year.” Each news person went on to repeat the explanation given to him/her as to why the strain making its rounds wasn’t covered by the vaccine, and gave precautions to take in preventing the flu. Recommended by the medical industry.

Sure it was!

The pharmaceutical company wrote that news report and the reason I think that is, at the end of each report the reporter stated, “Be sure to get to your doctor and get your flu shot today to stay free of the flu.”

Now the beginning statement and the ending statement was so ridiculous I broke out laughing”¦ If the flu vaccine wasn’t touching the flu outbreak WHY GET THE FLU VACCINE?

Are they listening to what they reading? I don’t think so!

It’s a brainless society that isn’t listening as well and rushed right out and got the flu vaccine that “didn’t touch the strain of flu going around.” This year it’s a virus in the manufacturing plant that held up the 2004 flu vaccine. What happened with the first shipments that went out from the same facility? Is that now on the market contaminated and you aren’t being told? Could it be that this year’s flu vaccine isn’t a bit more effective than last years, as has been for many years past?

Yet people are lining up 500 deep to get flu vaccine here in North Central Arizona and I bet all over the U.S. because they “may not have enough to go around”!

Why get the questionable flu vaccine when it may or may not be effective? Much more effective more often are simple immune building tricks to make your body flu proof?

Sadly the flu vaccine that is chosen each year misses the mark more than it hits it, but for some reason that word is never published nor spoken by the news media. Why? Because the drug companies send out the press releases and telling the truth would kill their business costing them billions of dollars!

What will this year hold at the end of the flu season?

I don’t know for sure, except that maybe a huge increase in a very dangerous nasal FluMist at double the price of the flu vaccine. If you are thinking about getting the nasal FluMist, before you do read what Dr. Mercola has to say at http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2003/10/04/flumist-vaccine.aspx

[Editor’s Note: The original FluMist link Ms. Sanchez chose was no longer valid, thus I insert Dr. Mercola’s link]

How can you be free of the flu and other illnesses during dangerous health seasons?

Three Simple Preventions are;

  1. Wash your hands every time you touch something that is brought in from the grocery store, pharmacy, hardware, etc. HANDLING ANYTHING ANYONE ELSE TOUCHED is a need to WASH YOUR HANDS. Carry wipes with you, for that purpose, when away from home.
  2. Get your immune system in tune by eating a proper diet. Get AT THE LEAST 10 to 45 minutes of walking or other exercise daily, and supplement with a total 84 liquid mineral trace mineral supplement, megavitamins and antioxidants!
  3. This is the hardest prevention action for this time of year, but STAY AWAY FROM CROWDS until your immune system is fine-tuned and flu proofed. People’s inconsiderate lifestyle of going out even when coughing sneezing and feeling bad will catch you unaware! Or they may have had the nasal vaccine, which puts you at risk!

WHAT FOODS ARE GREAT FOR A NATURAL BODY DETOX
By John Khu

When you are thinking about a body detox plan, there is a good chance that you are suffering from all the signs of having too many toxins your system; you are lethargic, tired all the time, and probably fighting depression on top of it. When you are looking for ways towards a full body detox, you’ll find that you are often told to eat better, but what does that mean? The fact

is, there are many foods that you can eat that will have an excellent whole body detox effect on you, so make sure that you stock up the next time that you are at the grocery store!

  1. Broccoli Spears: You’ll find that broccoli has some very powerful antioxidants at work in it, and they are also hard at work when it comes to be an enzyme stimulator. Many people balk from eating this vegetable, but try it again as an adult, even if you hated it as a little kid; this is surprisingly tasty when steamed and it is used in many a body detox recipe.
  2. Lemons: Not only do lemons provide you with a good dose of Vitamin C, you’ll find that it can be a great way to keep your body regulated as well. Mix up some fresh-squeezed lemonade and make sure that you drink it down; lemons contain some powerful antioxidants in form that is very easy to absorb into your system during a body detox plan.
  3. Leafy Greens: In a word, salads! Leafy green vegetables can be integrated into any body detox recipe and you’ll find that the chlorophyll in them helps you sweep out toxins that include heavy metals and pesticides. Leafy greens are excellent for the liver. Make sure that you choose the heftier types of lettuces, though; iceberg lettuce doesn’t have very much when it comes to nutrients, but romaine and spinach are excellent.
  4. Garlic: Lets hope you like Asian food or Italian food, because one of the best detox foods for you out there is garlic. When you are sick, the sulfur in garlic can help kill of the germs, and you’ll find that it is quite powerful when it comes to helping protect your heart and your liver. You’ll find that eating garlic is one of the healthiest things that you can do on a body detox diet
  5. Fish: When you are looking to do a home body detox, you should typically stay away from meats, but fish for the most part is significantly better for you than any sort of red meats. Not only will you get a good complement of the good kind of oils, you will also see that eating salmon and halibut can help your body cleanse itself of cravings for heavier meats.
  6. Just about any kind of fruit: Fruits are great because they can help you beat a craving for refined sugars when you are easing into a body detox diet. Take some time and figure out what fruits you like. Many nutritionists are saying that red fruits are great for helping you detox, so pile on the cranberries and strawberries. You’ll find that fruit can be a great way to kill hunger pangs and to have some really wonderfully tasty treats at any point in the day.

This is the beginning of great foods to eat when you are looking forward to a body detox plan, so don’t stop here! Look for more ways that you can do some spring cleaning on your body!

TEN TIPS FOR COPING WITH HOLIDAY STRESS
By Mark Sichel, LCSW

We all look forward to the holidays and hope that they will be a time of happiness, friendliness, fellowship, and harmony. Yet often our anticipation and excitement turns into feelings of depression and/or family disharmony.

Part of what happens in the holiday season, in terms of mood changes and anxiety, may occur because of the stressfulness of holiday events. It may also be caused by overdrinking, overeating, and fatigue. The demands of the season are many: shopping, cooking, and travel house guests, family reunions, parties, office parties, and extra financial burden.

Sometimes people who are not generally depressed actually struggle with holiday depression. Symptoms can include headaches, insomnia, uneasiness, anxiety, sadness, intestinal problems, and unnecessary conflict with family and friends.

Here are some tools to get through the holiday season happily””as well as ways to prevent problems and misery for yourself and your loved ones:

  1. Have an attitude of gratitude. Misery and gratitude cannot occupy the same space in our psychological house, and we have the power to choose between these emotional states.
  2. One golden rule to getting along with family”¦.be responsible for how you behave; you certainly have no control over how your relatives behave. The most important part of avoiding holiday stress with our families is for each of us to feel mastery over, and satisfaction with, our own behaviors, attitudes and feelings. If you know in your head and your heart that you’ve acted like the best parent, child, brother, sister, friend that you know how to be, you can walk away from any difficulty feeling good about yourself.
  3. If you’re feeling depressed and lonely, volunteer with any number of groups that help underprivileged or hospitalized children, the homeless, or the aged and disabled at the holidays. There are many, many opportunities for doing community service. No one can be depressed when they are doing community service.
  4. Decide upon your priorities and stick to them. Organize your time. Be reasonable with your schedule. Do not overbook yourself into a state of exhaustion–this makes people cranky, irritable, and depressed.
  5. Remember, no matter what your plans, the holidays do not automatically take away feelings of aloneness, sadness, frustration, anger, and fear.
  6. Be careful about resentments related to holidays past. Declare an amnesty with whichever family member or friend you are feeling past resentments. Do not feel it is helpful or intimate to tell your relative every resentment on your long laundry list of grievances. Don’t let your relative do that to you, either.
  7. Don’t expect the holidays to be just as they were when youwere a child. They NEVER are. YOU are not the same as when you were achild, and no one else in the family is either. On the other hand,if your memories of childhood holidays are awful, be grateful that you now have the capacity and skills to make them wonderful for yourself and those you love.
  8. Plan unstructured, low-cost fun holiday activities: window-shop and look at the Holiday  decorations. Look at people’s Christmas lighting on their homes, take a trip to the countryside, etc.– the opportunities are endless.
  9. Do not let the holidays become a reason for over-indulging in food and drink and create unnecessary weight gain and hangovers for yourself. This will exacerbate your depression and anxiety. Contrary to popular opinion, alcohol is a depressant.
  10. Give yourself a break; create time for yourself to do the things YOU love to do.

If you keep only one thing in mind to combat the holiday blues, make it be to remember: The choice is always yours: The sky is partly sunny, and the glass is half full, if you want it to be that way. Depression is usually a clinical disorder, but sometimes “the blues” confront all of us, particularly at holiday time. It may be caused by the memory of loss, feelings of disappointment, or just being run down from parties, overeating, and drinking. But for many of us, holiday depression can be a choice we, in effect, choose to make. If we choose not to make this choice, we can choose instead to focus on the partly sunny skies and revel in our gratitude for our bounty, health, hope, and our courage to face each day with hope and determination.

A TOUCH OF HUMOR: THE “SENILITY” PRAYER

God, grant me the Senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones that I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Now that I’m older, here’s what I’ve discovered:

  1. I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
  2. My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.
  3. I finally got my head together; now my body is falling apart.
  4. Funny, I don’t remember being absent minded.
  5. All reports are in; Life is now officially unfair.
  6. If all is not lost, where is it?
  7. It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
  8. Some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant.
  9. I wish the buck stopped here; I sure could use a few…
  10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents.
  11. Accidents in the back seat cause…kids.
  12. It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere.
  13. Only time the world beats a path to your door is when you’re in the bathroom.
  14. If I was meant to touch my toes, they would have been located on my knees.
  15. When I’m finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide to play chess?
  16. It’s not hard to meet expenses…they’re everywhere.
  17. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
  18. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter… I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I’m here after.
