How To Stop the Spread of Kennel Cough Without Chemicals

Cleansing the air may stop the spread

Bordetella, kennel cough, is highly infectious. Once you have one dog coughing, you have a problem on your hands. And you know it’s something you’ll be fighting with sooner or later.

The hard part comes from how to control the spread of the kennel cough bacteria and other canine infectious diseases. It’s the #1 problem for many groomers and kennels, but stopping the spread of any canine infectious disease is hard.

This is a common customer complaint: “When I took my dog to get neutered, the office had their filter break down just the day before, and you could smell the dog and cat odor strong. I don’t know how the techs and vets survived! And of course, my dog, who was there just a few hours, came home with kennel cough.”

Well, we’ve got some good news for you. There is at least one proven way to control the outbreak and help prevent new infections.

How the Right Air Purifier Stops the Spread of Kennel Cough

The Bordetella bacteria spread when an infected dog coughs. The bacteria are propelled through the air, hanging out in the mist or settling on various objects. Some of those little bacteria can go 35 feet or more!

Dogs, being dogs, lick themselves and other objects, including the ones that have the infectious snot all over them. And then they’ll say hi to other dogs, putting their noses in places best left outside of polite company.

So, how do we stop it? Just cleaning the surface of objects isn’t going to be enough. More will settle out of the air and more will get shot out with every sneeze. Merely filtering the air isn’t enough because some bacteria (and most viruses) are small enough to pass right through the filters to get shot right back in the air.

We need something more.

Air Oasis Photocatalytic Oxidation Air Purifiers to the Rescue

When you want to clean the air of infectious diseases caused by bacteria and viruses, and create a healthier environment for you and your dogs, you need something that works.

Here’s how the process in the Air Oasis air purifier works (for us non-chemists):

UVC lamps utilize the short wavelength of ultraviolet light (UV, like the sun) harmful to life at the microscopic level. It destroys their DNA. This removes their ability to replicate, and often kills them!

This level of eradication can only be achieved using a UVC or UVX lamp in the 254 nm range. Any other UV lamp air purifiers will not be effective!

Then, the UV radiation bombards a reactive surface, in this case, nanoparticles from precious metals including silver and nickel covered plate. This is the photo (UV) catalytic (plate) part.

Additionally, the UV lamp creates ozone which converts into five oxidizing ions: hydroxyl, hydro peroxide, super oxide, ozonide, and negative ions. By utilizing redundant oxidizers, you receive greater benefits than that of ozone alone, without the harmful side effects of an ozone air purifier.

These ions love to grab onto pollutants, allergens, odors, bacteria, molds, and viruses in the air and on surfaces, and when they do, they break them down by into harmless carbon dioxide and water.

This process is all contained in the air filtration unit in your dog kennel, so you only experience clean, fresh air. And your dogs are healthier for it. It’s not a kennel cough treatment, but one of the best ways to prevent airborne transmission of over a dozen different infectious problems.

Now, some people may say that sounds a bit like the free radicals we don’t want in our bodies, the ones that make us sick. And you’re right; they are free radicals. Here’s why this is safe for you and your dogs:

Certain free radicals work better against bacteria, funguses, and molds. This air purifier creates ozone and the other ions, which are very effective on microscopic organisms. Other types only exist in water or blood, which is what you don’t want and not what the unit creates.

The Air Oasis is excellent for kennel cough, dander, bacteria, viruses (like parvo), and pollen.

Do I Still Need To Clean?

Yes, you still need to clean.

The Air Oasis is one of the best ways to eliminate kennel cough, after the kennel cough vaccine, but it isn’t a miracle. It can only cleanse so much air at a time. You will still need to wash and disinfect the cages and kennel areas regularly.

When you locate the air purifier high in the space, like suspended above the kennels, it’s most efficient. It helps to pull the odors, dust, dander, and bacteria away from the dogs and helps stop it from settling back down. Your kennel, grooming salon, or shop can be free of offensive odors, dangerous bacteria, and convey a high quality appearance that encourages a higher volume of customers and adoptions.
