INSPIRING QUOTE FOR THIS ISSUE:

“How is it that we can experience God’s Presence one moment, and the next find ourselves yelling at the children, panicking over finances or jealous of a neighbor? We might find ourselves using deception to avoid trouble or to get what we think we want. We might find ourselves passing judgment, or keeping a score of wrongs. We are only human, of course, but perhaps our way of connecting with the Presence is spotty or inconsistent. How might we strengthen that connection?” — Mary Manin Morrissey

PEACE IS EVERY STEP
Thich Nhat Hanh

Every morning, when we wake up, we have twenty-four brand-new hours to live. What a precious gift! We have the capacity to live in a way that these twenty-four hours will bring peace, joy, and happiness to ourselves and others.

Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. The question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We don’t have to travel far away to enjoy the blue sky. We don’t have to leave our city or even our neighborhood to enjoy the eyes of a beautiful child. Even the air we breathe can be a source of joy.

We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness that is available. We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma, and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive. Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.

LOOK AT THINGS AS THEY CAN BE
By Mentor Max

Life is wonderful because it gives you chances.
You have a fair chance to be as great as you please.
There are no limits to your possibilities.

At any moment in time,
you have more possibilities than you can act upon.
Imagine the possibilities and your vision expands.

You can capture your dreams if you reach out for them.
You have powers you never dreamed of.
You can do things you never thought you could do.

You have no limitations in what you can do
except the limitations of your own mind.
When the impossible has been eliminated,
whatever remains, no matter how improbable is possible.

You don’t know what you can do until you try.

You can live your dreams.

RELATIONSHIPS ARE JOURNEYS
By Lloyd J. Thomas, Ph.D.

This year almost two million marriages will end by divorce. There will be more next year. We seem to have enormous difficulty building and maintaining primary relationships.

Graylag geese, once they find a mate, remain bonded exclusively to each other for a lifetime. If one of a pair of graylags dies, the other never seeks or finds another with which to mate. They are monogamous creatures and remain so for their entire lives. Now if graylags geese can manage to keep a primary relationship, why can’t we??

People don’t seem to get married anymore “and live happily ever after.” They live together, then they might marry “and live happily for quite some time.” Something is missing. Maybe more than “something” is missing. Perhaps a whole lot of things are missing in relationships that are not sustained. One of those “missing somethings” is what I call the “spiritual side of a relationship.”

It might be useful to think of a relationship’s “spiritual side” as a journey. Your journey has a purpose, a goal. It is important that couples accept they are in this relationship, on this journey, for a purpose. A purpose that goes beyond personal satisfaction of sex, security, or power. One spiritual purpose is to relate to one another as mutual guides. Perhaps your best teacher and guide for your journey is your partner. Maybe you can acknowledge one another as your best guide and the purpose of your relationship is to help each other realize your own individual potential, your own spark of life, your own “divinity” if you will.

Most of us long for something more than ourselves to which we can devote time and energy. If we respect this “longing for something greater in our lives”…if we recognize it in ourselves and in our partner, then our journey becomes aimed toward the mutual fulfillment of that longing. Our relationship becomes a primary resource on our “spiritual path.”

Like most journeys, the way is not always without hazards and difficulties. In India, they refer to the “practice of relationship” as being “hot like a chili pepper.” Sometimes relationships are hot. Sometimes they are cold. Sometimes they are warm and comforting. Sometimes they are rough and we stumble. Sometimes they are smooth and we glide along freely and with ease. Sometimes relationships are joyous, sometimes sad. We need to accept that our relational journey is not always easy.

When we define the difficulties in our relationship as “training,” we are more likely to remain in them. Physical training requires resistance, pain, persistence, and discipline. So why should training in a relationship be anything different? Relationships are a perfect laboratory for learning about yourself. They are a great path for developing awareness and understanding of you and of others. They serve as a great training ground for learning to love, and for freeing yourself from addictions and negative habits. Someone once said, “Love always brings up the negative in the loved one.” It’s true.

Journeys are undertaken with the faith that they will take you through an ever-changing landscape, completed and not aborted. Relationships can be undertaken with faith in the process of growth and change in both you and your partner, and will not be aborted because of those changes. Indeed changes are inevitable in any relationship that is not yet dead. Define these changes as opportunities for personal and relational development.

Finally, as we journey, we need to keep in mind the vision of where we want to be at the journey’s end. In a relationship, keep before you the vision of your partner’s true self, the one you loved at the beginning. Keep this vision, especially when it is lost from your view in the daily activities and temporary setbacks you experience. Keep this vision most clearly, when your partner has lost it of himself (herself). If you maintain your vision of who your partner is, he or she will find it in your eyes when they need it the most.

In any journey it is most important to love what you have on the path at the moment, as well as watch where you are going. As we walk, we don’t want to miss the flowers, the sights, the sounds, the life around us. Antoine De Saint–Exupery said, “Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.” May your journey be in the same direction and you realize your visions of who you are and who you may become within it.

OUR DESTINY BEGINS FROM WITHIN OURSELVES
By Roberto Zarotti

What is success ? There are many definitions. One that I hear often is “to do (or to live according to) what you want”. That is true, but I would complete the definition by adding and underlining: “knowing what you really want”. In fact, we are often pushed to go and put our energy in achieving what we are “supposed” to want, and we may give not enough attention in making sure about what we really want. I say “supposed” to want because there are many external factors that condition us and determine our beliefs around what is good and what is not, what is a good goal and what is not, and so on.

But the self-awareness about who we really are and what we really want is the premise to achieving any real, long lasting success in our life. Without this, we are likely to move along two ways: One is the walk around life aimless, without a goal. The other is to pursue an aim that, on a deep level, we do not feel like really ours. In both these situation we find difficulties in expressing and manifesting our full potential. Even if we keep on repeating ourselves that we have a certain goal, if we are not deeply convinced of it, it will be difficult for us to really put all the necessary energy and commitment. Our inner conflicts and not clear intentions interfere with our actions.

Things turn around dramatically when we know what we really want. Not only we feel and use another level of energy, but also we experience a feeling of peace and trust. We are then ready to manifest what we have inside in the world around us and create the destiny we deserve. We achieve dramatic improvement in all the key areas of our life: relationships, body, financial state.

All we need is already within us now, but we need to really find it, listen to it, and translate it into our realities. When we dedicate time to this research within ourselves, we spend well our time, in my opinion. In the self-improvement world, there are also techniques that can help in this process and speed it up. It is a promising and fascinating research. Just one more, apparently small idea, can have a huge impact in our whole life.

A TOUCH OF HUMOR: FALLING OFF A BRIDGE

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said “Stop! don’t do it!”

“Why shouldn’t I?” he said.

I said, “Well, there’s so much to live for!”

He said, “Like what?”

I said, “Well… are you religious or atheist?”

He said, “Religious.”

I said, “Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?”

He said, “Christian.”

I said, “Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?”

He said, “Protestant.”

I said, “Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?”

He said, “Baptist!”

I said, “Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?”

He said, “Baptist Church of God!”

I said, “Me too! Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?”

He said,”Reformed Baptist Church of God!”

I said, “Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?”

He said, “Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915!”

I said, “Die, heretic scum” and pushed him off the cliff.
