What Are Smart Meters?
Smart Meters are electric and gas meter reading devices being installed throughout the United States as a first step in creating a national smart grid and to improve energy efficiency. Smart Meters offer electric companies many benefits:
- Smart Meters allow electric companies to monitor the electrical grid more quickly.
- They provide real-time data useful for balancing electric loads and reducing power outages (blackouts).
- They enable dynamic pricing (raising or lowering the cost of electricity based on demand).
- They eliminate manual meter reading, providing a huge savings in payroll.
- They make it possible to use power resources more efficiently.
But for the consumer — YOU — the benefits are few: They receive more detailed feedback on energy use, which enables them to adjust their habits to lower electric bills.
However, the biggest consumer complaint to date after having a Smart Meter installed is skyrocketing bills, which appear to be due to more accurate measuring of electricity rather than defects in the Smart Meters.
But Are Smart Meters Safe?
Smart Meters are radio transmitters that communicate data from homes and businesses to the gas and electric company through a matrix of radio signals. The same applies to cell phones that communicate via cell phone towers. Both offer risks related to the effects of low-level radiation, which is produced by the smart grid’s wireless radio frequency network.
While electric companies claim that Smart Meters emit less radiation than cell phones, the opposite is true, with the exception of the iPhone, which is comparable to a Smart Meter in the amount of electromagnetic radiation emitted. Here are a few sites that did tests:

Symptoms of Using Wireless Devices
People living in homes installed with Smart Meters are claiming mild to severe symptoms that are all over the board: Concentration and memory problems, dizziness, tinnitus, heart palpitations, headaches, sleep disruptions, nausea, anxiety and behavioral problems in children. These are the same symptoms claimed by cell phone users.
People are especially concerned about certain groups who are vulnerable to Smart Meter (and cell phone) health risks, such as children (who absorb radiation at a greater rate than adults), electro-sensitive people, people with pacemakers and chronically ill people whose immune systems are compromised.
Austrian Medical Association Calls for Smart Meter Halt
In a January 18, 2012 letter to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economics, Family and Youth, the Austrian Chamber of Physicians called for a reconsideration or suspension of “the planned timetable of the mandatory introduction of “˜smart meters'” in Austria, “pending clarification and solution of open questions.” Their letter states in part:
“The Austrian Chamber of Physicians strictly rejects another, in this case actually state-mandated, expansion of the electrosmog exposure on the Austrian population.
“The expected health consequences would be an increase in symptoms and diseases that fall into the category of so-called multi-system diseases. This illness is characterized by involving several organs or functional systems at the same time and in interaction.

Aulterra Neutralizer Discs
The Aulterra Neutralizer discs are one inch in diameter and thin enough to place in the battery compartment of a cellular or cordless telephone. The disc can be cut into smaller pieces for smaller phones. Stick an Aulterra disc directly on your Smart Meter, and for extra protection, get an Aulterra whole house plug and stick it inside the house into the electrical outlet closest to your Smart Meter.
